Healing Qualia

TREATMENT PROTOCOL

Guiding adult survivors back to trusting themselves again

Adult survivors of child psychological abuse are raised to doubt their own account of their childhood, and to distrust the targeted parent.

Healing Qualia presents a six-phase sequence with crisis architecture to guide a client back to trusting their own perception, knowing their own history, and standing on their own decisions. Recovery is not measured by reconciliation or contact, but by whether a survivor can stand firm in their identity without retraumatisation.

A systematic search of the peer-reviewed literature screened 3,922 records for a treatment protocol written for adult survivors of severe parental alienation. Not one met the inclusion criteria.

Asked what they use instead, 10 practitioners working with this population named 37 different modalities between them, with almost no overlap; of 72 training topics they recommended, 5 were named more than once.

There has never been a shared model to work from.

The Healing Qualia Treatment Protocol

The Healing Qualia Treatment Protocol was developed to address child psychological abuse across parental alienation (CPA-PA), parental alienation and abduction (CPA-PAA), and parental estrangement, relocation or abduction (CPA-PERA), filling the gap in existing literature focused on children in custody disputes.

Phases are sequenced but non-linear. Each carries entry conditions, decision points, and a companion note in plain language for the client. A crisis architecture runs across all six phases, as recognition itself can destabilise the client.

Included in the Protocol

Know when a client is ready to move forward and when pushing would set them back.

Plain-language notes to hand the client, so they do not regress between sessions.

Why telling a survivor they were manipulated hardens their beliefs, and what to do instead.

A competency framework for deciding whether a referral is yours to take, and defending that decision.

A tiered crisis plan for sessions where clients are facing their trauma wounds, so you are not improvising.

How to be useful to a family court without stepping into forensic opinion.

A separate pathway for survivors of childhood abduction, where the standard sequence does not apply.

How to protect yourself from vicarious trauma, supervision gaps, and the threats practitioners face when supporting these kinds of clients.

What practitioners and adult survivors are saying about Healing Qualia

‘There would be few publications to match the unique nature of this work. It synthesises lived experience and clinical practice into an integrated framework that addresses the special needs of a unique population. This work is a must-read for practitioners who, until now, may never have known the true person who walked through their door.’

“Dr Alyse Price-Tobler’s work is the missing link between the well-known “Voice of the Child” and the often overlooked, rarely understood “Experience of the Child” in complex, high-conflict family separations. It is essential reading for Family Law professionals and Therapists working with separated parents and children.”

“I was an alienated child... Alienation doesn't end with reunification. It ends with healing from the trauma. Healing Qualia is the first book I've read that lays out both what the alienated child is living through and what recovery actually looks like.”

“Dr Price-Tobler's therapeutic protocol for adult child survivors, The Healing Qualia Treatment Protocol, is more than a treatment guide. It is an invaluable resource for family law practitioners, serving as a comprehensive reference on the nature of childhood physical and psychological abuse, its lifelong effects, and the behavioural patterns and symptoms commonly exhibited by survivors."

“Dr Price-Tobler’s Healing Qualia is an outstanding treatment protocol! Anyone daring to practice with adult survivors of child psychological abuse (alienation, related family-system harm) needs the HQTP treatment protocol as their number 1 training manual. I’m very excited to see such a great treatment protocol available to specialist practitioners and experts in this field and all fields involving high conflict family violence matters.”

“Congratulations to Dr Alyse Price-Tobler on this important contribution to the filed. Her work reflects the kind of ethical, research driven commitment that our profession needs. She brings both intellectual rigor and genuine compassion to one of the most challenging and often misunderstood areas of clinical practice. This book is a testament to her dedication to advancing specialised, evidence-informed care for individuals and families who deserve to be seen, understood, and supported with integrity and thoughtfulness.”

“As a forensic criminologist and adult survivor of severe level Child Psychological Abuse related to Parental Alienation and Abduction (CPA-PAA), I know first hand the devastating costs of clinical blind spots. When I first sought help, my depression was treated as a surface symptom while the underlying pathological enmeshment, coercive control, and fabricated identity remained unseen. Had this protocol been available earlier, it could have changed the course of my life.”

“As a retired barrister, I see this book as a rare and necessary clinical window beyond the legal file. Healing Qualia helps legal professionals understand the long term repercussions for adult children who have moved through the Family Court system, particularly when coercive family dynamics are misunderstood, minimised or left unresolved.”

“Life is very difficult when one doesn't understand that they've been through brainwashing from their own parent and they had another parent that loved them. I was 20 years apart from my father before reunification. I can never get that time back. Healing Qualia feels like a soothing, comforting verbal hug that helps explain the trauma I've been through.”

Every second counts

Adult survivors reach clinical services late, and recognition of what happened to them often arrives decades after the harm. Survivors in this population report elevated distress, identity collapse and relational isolation. Getting structured treatment guidance into practitioners' hands is an urgent clinical matter, not an academic one.
